Laboratory safety training overview
Environmental Health & Safety provides training both online and in-person on topics relevant to laboratory workers and supervisors. These courses satisfy some of the requirements set forth by federal, state, and local regulations as well as the University Administrative Manual. In the spring of 2017, the traditional laboratory safety training workshop offered by EH&S was changed to include a supplemental hands-on training course. These practical training sessions are held in the EH&S Safety Training for Academic Research or "STAR" Lab, located in the Applied Research Facility, room 301. Learn more about the STAR Lab.
At minimum, laboratory personnel should attend the following in-person EH&S training courses upon initial assignment:
- "Laboratory Safety Online Training (Part 1 of 2)"
- Online Course
- Mandatory annual refresher course is also available online
- "Laboratory Biosafety Training (Supplement to Part 1)"
- Required only if working with biological agents
- Online course
- Mandatory annual refresher course is also available online
- "Laboratory Safety Hands-On Training (Part 2 of 2)"
- In-person Workshop
Research faculty and tenure-track academic faculty are exempt from the hands-on portion of the training only but are still strongly encouraged to attend. All other classes of laboratory workers (i.e. post-doctoral researchers, staff researchers, volunteers, letter-of-appointment employees, classified staff, graduate assistants, and student workers) are required to attend. (Note: Those individuals who attended Laboratory Safety Training prior to January 2017 need not attend the hands-on course.) All laboratory workers and supervisors (including all types of faculty) must attend the classroom portion of the course. View additional laboratory personnel training requirements.
