Waste handling quick reference
Hazardous waste, satellite accumulation areas, labeling and container management
If you are collecting waste, then you have what is called a Satellite Accumulation Area, which is defined as containers where wastes initially accumulate at or near the point of generation which is under the control of the operator.
Your waste is hazardous if it is flammable, toxic, reactive and/or corrosive. Look for hazards listed on the chemical’s label and/or SDS.
If you are accumulating waste you may accumulate as much as 55 gallons of hazardous waste or one quart of acutely hazardous waste.
All waste containers MUST be labeled with the contents of the container. EH&S supplies the chemical waste labels. They must be completely filled out with the details of the contents of the container. No formulae or abbreviations are allowed.
Lids on containers must always be on tightly except when waste is being added to the container. Tightly means if the container is tipped, it will not spill. Our EH&S supplied buckets are labeled to remind you.
Details on these requirements and many other aspects of chemical safety are in our CHP. Chapter 19 addresses chemical waste management.
