Testing Information

The Praxis I Core Academic Skills for Educators is required by the State of Nevada and a majority of other states for licensure. Passing scores are a requirement for admission into our teacher education program. The Praxis Core test covers the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. Each section of the test may be taken separately if desired, but many students take all three tests on the same day.

The California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) is only required by two states, California and Oregon, and is also accepted by the State of Nevada in lieu of the Praxis Core test. Passing scores on the CBEST may fulfill the requirement for admission into the teacher education program as well as for state licensure. The CBEST covers the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics.

Either test is acceptable in order to apply to a teacher education program.  Both tests show college-level English and math skills.

How can I prepare for the Praxis and the CBEST?

Most students will feel prepared for the test after completing English 102 and Math 126. If you have a weakness in a particular area, you should prepare well in advance. There are several ways to prepare for the tests. A computerized version of the tests are available for use at the Learning Resource Center (first floor William Raggio Building). Example questions are also available on the websites where you register for the tests.   Finally, there are several study guides written about the Praxis, some of which are available at the ASUN Bookstore in the Joe Crowley Student Union (JCSU).

Where can I take the tests?

The tests are given on computer at testing centers in Reno, not at the University of Nevada, Reno.  Please see details of options when you register.  You may also choose a testing center outside of Reno, as the tests are given at various places around the state and country.

When should I take the tests?

Take the tests as soon as you have completed ENG 102 and Core Math 126 or 120.  The test scores do not expire.  Keep a paper copy and an electronic copy of your test scores to submit with your program application, and also for future reference throughout your teaching career.  Take the tests at least 6 weeks prior to program application date, as it takes several weeks to process your scores.  Also, if you need to retest due to a failing score, you will need time to reschedule the test.  You may repeat a section if you fail - you do not need to retake the entire test.  But you must pass all three sections of ONE test, either the Praxis Core Academic Skills test or the CBEST.

How do I register?

Log on to the Educational Testing Services website at ets.org/praxis and follow the directions to register. The CBEST is given several times a year at TMCC,  in California, and in Oregon. Visit the CBEST website to discover specific test dates, test locations, and to download a computerized practice test.
