Using Kaltura to deploy multimedia content in WebCampus

Kaltura is our video server for WebCampus (Canvas) that allows you to incorporate video into your course with ease. You can add video content that you generate to any part of your WebCampus course and have your students turn in their video content/assignments or add video to a discussion via the Kaltura tool in the text editor.

Add video to your course with Kaltura by doing the following:

  • Uploading an existing video/audio file from your computer (*.mpg, *.avi, *.mp4, *.mp3, *.wav & more)
  • Recording your webcam and/or screen using the Kaltura Capture screen recording app

Kaltura consists of two main areas: My Media and the Media Gallery.

My Media: The My Media area contains all of your media that has been uploaded to Kaltura. My Media is associated with your user name and is not associated with a specific course; this means you can deploy one video across multiple courses & semesters (no need to upload the same video multiple times). Instructors can deploy videos located in My Media to their Media Gallery or wherever the WebCampus text editor is available.

Media Gallery: The Media Gallery is a course repository of media content. When enabled, the instructor and students will all see whatever content the instructor has published to the Gallery for that course. This is just one of the ways that an instructor can share video content with their students.

Why should you use Kaltura?

  • Provides a secure environment that helps ensure only the people you want to see your content have access
  • Allows IDT staff to easily provide captions for your content
  • Makes it easy to reuse content across courses and semesters
  • No limitations on the size or amount of content you can upload. Copyright restrictions, however, are still a factor in what you can upload

My Media

My Media is the central location for all of the media that you upload to Kaltura. My Media is specific to the user, so the content shown in My Media is associated with the user logged into WebCampus, rather than the instructor of the course. In order to enable My Media in your Course menu, you will need to go to Settings in WebCampus.

  • Enabling My Media in WebCampus

Follow the steps below to enable My Media in your course menu:

    1. Browse to the course in WebCampus where you would like to enable My Media
    2. Click on "Settings" (link) in the Course Menu on the left side of the course
    3. Click on the "Navigation" tab at the top of the Settings page.
    4. Drag "My Media" from the bottom list to the top list. Where you place it in the top list will determine its location on the Course Menu
    5. Click the "Save" button (link) at the bottom of the page. My Media should now be visible in your course menu

NOTE: The first time you access Kaltura through WebCampus, you will be asked to grant permissions. Click "OK" (link) to proceed.

  • How to upload content to My Media

Follow the steps below to upload content to My Media:

    1. Browse to one of your courses in WebCampus (My Media is the same in all of your courses)

    2. Click on "My Media" in the Course Menu.

    3. From the My Media page, click on the "Add New" drop-down and select "Media Upload"

    4. On the next page, click on the "+" and "Choose a file to upload" button (link)

    5. Browse to the file you would like to upload and click the "Open" button (link). The next page will show if the upload completed and let you edit the content name, description and tags. You can either leave the video as Private, meaning you are the only one who can view or you can choose to Publish the video to one or more of your courses.

    6. Click the "Save" button (link) to continue.

You can Publish a video or set it to Private a later time. This can be useful if you want to control student access. You only need to upload a single copy of a video, even if you plan to use it in multiple courses. You can publish the same video across multiple courses, so there is no need for duplicates or multiple copies.

Using Kaltura content with the Media Gallery

One of the easiest ways to deploy content with Kaltura is to use the Media Gallery in your courses. You can easily publish your content to the Media Gallery from My Media (and you can do this for multiple courses at once if desired). Media published to the Media Gallery can be accessed by your students at any time. Follow the steps below to set up the Media Gallery for your course.

  • How to add the Media Gallery to your course menu

Browse to the course in WebCampus where you would like to enable My Media. Click on Settings in the Course Menu on the left side of the course. Click on the Navigation tab at the top of the Settings page. Drag Media Gallery from the bottom list to the top list. Where you place it in the top list will determine its location on the Course Menu. Click the Save button. Media Gallery should now be visible in your course menu.

  • How to add content from My Media to the Media Gallery

The Media Gallery allows you to place all of the video (and audio) content for your course in one location. You will need to enable the Media Gallery from course settings if it is not visible on your course menu. Follow the steps below to publish content from My Media to a Media Gallery in your course. Browse to your course in WebCampus. Click on My Media in the Course Menu. From the My Media page, click on the video you would like to publish to your Media Gallery.

From the video details page that loads, click on the Actions drop-down menu and select +Publish. You will be given the option to publish the video or make private. Click the radio button next to Published to select it if it is not already selected. Under "Publish in Gallery" click on the checkboxes next to each course where you would like to publish the video. There is no limit to the number of courses to which a video can be published. Click the Save button once you have made your selections. NOTE: All instances where the video is published will be noted under "Published in." This includes both in Media Galleries and in context.
