  1. During the 1950s and 1960s, English Department members Drs. Charlton Laird and Robert Gorrell's "Modern English Handbook" became the standard text for college classrooms across the nation.
  2. Acclaimed western author Walter Van Tilburg Clark ("The Ox-Bow Incident" & "The Track of the Cat") was the University's Writer-In-Residence for a decade in the 1960s.
  3.  Department of Psychology researchers Allen and Beatrix Gardner conducted ground-breaking, internationally acclaimed communication research with chimpanzees during the 1960s and 1970s.
