Employees working a full-time schedule, earn 10 hours of annual leave for each month of continuous full-time service. After six months of full-time service you are eligible to use leave at this time. Your appointing authority must approve annual leave. |

Employees earn 10 hours of sick leave for each month of full-time service. Part-time employees earn a prorated amount based on full-time equivalent service. Sick leave can be used as soon as it is accrued. (NRS 284.355, NAC 284.113 and 284.544) |

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993 entitles eligible employees to take up to 12 weeks of job-protected leave in a “rolling” 12-month period for specified family and medical reasons. The leave may be taken in blocks of time, or under some circumstances, you may take leave intermittently or reduce your normal work schedule. (Overview Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, revised August 18, 2000) To be eligible for FMLA leave, you must: FMLA leave must be granted for one or more of the following reasons: You must provide at least 30 days advance notice when the need for leave is foreseeable. If 30 days notice is not possible, such as a medical emergency, notice must be given as soon as practicable. Less stringent notice requirements pertaining to annual or sick leave apply when used instead of unpaid leave. |

Sick leave may be used only for authorized reasons. Sick leave can be used if you are unable to work because of illness or injury, incapacity due to pregnancy or childbirth, for medical and dental appointments, family illness (subject to some limitations) and a death (up to 5 working days) in your immediate family. If you retire or voluntarily terminate your employment, you may be eligible to receive payment for a portion of your accrued sick leave. See your personnel representative to determine when you would be eligible for this benefit. |

Maternity leave is not a special type of leave, but may consist of a combination of sick leave, annual leave, and leave without pay. The provisions of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) may apply to any leave you request for this purpose. (Refer to the Overview Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, revised August 18, 2000) |

If there is an illness or a medical, optometric or dental service or examination in your immediate family requiring your attendance, you may use your accumulated sick leave not to exceed 120 hours in any one calendar year. The appointing authority may approve an exception to the120- hour limit for good cause. In addition, an employee is not subject to this 120-hour limitation if the leave is approved under the Family and Medical Leave Act. ( NAC 284.558) |

Additionally, an employee may be eligible to receive a portion of his unused sick leave accrued but not carried forward (also known as special sick) when he leaves State service. To determine the amount of payoff, you may use the following formula: (special sick leave hrs accrued and not carried forward + 120 hrs accrued regular sick leave) /(divided by)2 X (multiplied by) rate of pay = payment amount |

You may qualify for catastrophic leave if you or a member of your immediate family is affected by a serious illness or accident which is life threatening or which requires a lengthy convalescence or there is a death in your immediate family. An appointing authority may grant administrative leave with pay to employees: 1. Participation in, or attendance at, activities which are directly or indirectly related to the employee's job or employment with the State, but which do not require participation or attendance in an official capacity as a State employee. |

In most cases, if you serve on a jury or as a witness in court or at an administrative hearing, you will be given civil leave with pay. You may keep all jury or witness fees paid to you except: |

You will be given a leave of absence with pay for 15 working days in any one calendar year in order to perform active military duty. |

| Release time during normal working hours is provided for a qualified employee to participate in any examination given by the Department of Personnel provided reasonable notice is given to the employee's immediate supervisor. The formal interview with the hiring State agency is typically considered part of the examination process. The release time within the normal workday will be considered the same as time worked. However, hours exceeding the normal workday or workweek do not qualify for overtime. (NAC 284.322) | ||
A leave of absence without pay may be approved for one year by the appointing authority for any satisfactory reason. The Personnel Commission, upon recommendation of the appointing authority, may grant a leave of absence without pay in excess of one year for purposes deemed beneficial to the public service. | If you are absent from work, you are required to report the reason for the absence to your supervisor or designated representative as prescribed by your agency. Any unauthorized and unreported absence may be grounds for disciplinary action. If you are physically unable to report your absence, you should have someone else do it for you. Full-time faculty on an “A” contract will receive two days per full month of employment. There is a maximum accrual of 48 days at the end of the fiscal year. Employees shall be given an opportunity to use accumulated annual leave in excess of 48 working days prior to the last day of the fiscal year provided a request for leave is given by the employee no later than April 1 to the supervisor or other appropriate administrative officer. Full-time faculty on an “A” or “B” contract will start their first year with 30 days. After the first year, two days per full month are accrued to a maximum of 96 days. Up to 15 days of sick leave per contract year may be used by the professional staff member to care for or assist family members for the following events: illness; injury, or medical, optometry or dental service or examination. Requests for use of additional earned sick leave days beyond the fifteen-day limitation may be made in writing to the appropriate appointing authority. Approval is at the discretion of the appropriate appointing authority. The fifteen-day limitation does not apply if the leave is approved under the Family and Medical Leave Act. A faculty member may petition for extended salaried sick leave, if a physician certifies that a faculty member is unable to resume duties and all accumulated sick and annual leave are exhausted. Three additional calendar months may be granted to faculty continuously employed between 12 months and 24 months; six calendar months to faculty employed between 24 months and 36 months and twelve months plus one calendar month for each additional year of employment for faculty employed more than 36 months. The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 entitles an employee to a total of 12 weeks of leave during a rolling 12-month period. FMLA may be used for the birth of a child, and to care for the newborn child; for placement of a child with the faculty member for adoption or foster care; to care for the faculty member's spouse, parent or child with a serious health condition; or because the faculty member is unable to work due to a serious health condition. To qualify the faculty member must have been employed at a minimum of 60% FTE for at least 12 months. See Board of Regents Handbook, Title 4, Chapter 3, Section 14, number 6, Section 16 and Appendix and the State of Nevada (Overview Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, revised August 18, 2000). |

Unpaid leave relating to the birth, placement of a child with a faculty member for adoption or foster care, or child rearing of a child who is a member of the faculty member's household may be granted. The University will not maintain the faculty member's health insurance coverage unless the unpaid leave is approved under FMLA. Faculty who are members of federal reserve forces or the Nevada National Guard are entitled to serve without loss of regular compensation for a period not to exceed 15 working days in any calendar year. Additional military leave may be granted for periods in excess of 15 working days. See Board of Regents Handbook, Title 4, Chapter 3, Section 17. |

Judicial leave will be granted to serve on a jury or when summoned to be a witness. The faculty member may retain any remuneration received. Additionally, a short-term leave may be authorized by the appointing authority for up to 30 calendar days without loss of salary when in connection with the faculty member's official capacity as a university employee at a trial or other court proceeding. Any academic faculty member who has served full-time on a 10-month or 12-month contract for six or more years may be eligible for sabbatical leave. A faculty member will receive two-thirds salary for one year or full salary for six months upon approval by the appropriate committee (Sabbatical or Faculty Development Program). Sabbatical leave may be granted once every seven years. Part-time academic faculty members may be eligible for sabbatical leave on a pro-rated basis. Sabbatical leave is coordinated by the Office of the Provost. See Board of Regents Handbook, Title 4, Chapter 3, Section 11. |

Eligible administrators could apply for an administrative leave after serving at least three years as a full-time administrator. An administrator would be eligible to reapply for additional administrative leaves at three-year intervals. An administrative leave would not exceed three calendar months. Unless specified and approved in advance, the three-month administrative leave should be taken during the summer months and not require employment of a replacement. | Salary for persons terminating during a pay period will be calculated by dividing the working days for the month into the monthly salary and multiplying the result by the days worked. "A" contract faculty are paid for up to 48 days of unused annual leave unless they were directed in writing to use the annual leave prior to termination. Accumulated leave payments will be computed by dividing the monthly salary by 21.7 and multiplying the result by the number of days accumulated leave. | ||

There is no payment for unused annual leave upon termination of employment. Annual leave may not exceed 15 work days at the last day of each month. Will begin with 15 days upon hire. After 12 months from the hire date, will accrue at the rate of 1 ¼ working days per month, and will be added to any remaining balance of unused sick leave. The maximum amount of sick leave that can be accrued is 15 days. Any unused sick leave may be carried forward from year to year. There is no payment for unused sick leave upon termination of employment. Sick leave may not exceed 15 work days at the last day of each month.
