Faculty and staff awards

The College of Science annually recognizes outstanding faculty and staff. Below is a description of all College awards, as well as their recipients categorized by year. 

Berninsone Outstanding Service Award

  • Intent: To acknowledge a faculty member for outstanding outreach and/or
    service in the past academic year.
  • Criteria: Activities that go beyond the faculty member’s regular responsibilities in outreach or service. Contributions may be to diversity/equity/inclusion in the scientific or university community, scientific knowledge in the community, educational outreach, K-12 education, or other areas not explicitly named.
  • Nominators: Members of the College of Science.
  • Eligible Nominees: Academic and administrative faculty or classified staff members of any rank holding a permanent appointment of at least 50% in a unit in the College of Science.

Zaliapin Mentorship Award

  • Intent: To acknowledge outstanding mentorship by a member of the College of Science.
  • Criteria: Demonstration of the qualities inherent in an excellent mentor including relevant expertise and enthusiasm for sharing that expertise; ability to listen well, respectfully, nonjudgmentally and with empathy; commitment to the value of diverse perspectives; ability to give honest, candid and constructive feedback; flexibility; willingness to invest in and sponsor others.
  • Eligible Nominees: Academic and administrative faculty or classified staff members of any rank holding a permanent appointment of at least 50% in a unit in the College of Science.

Department Generosity Award

  • Intent: To promote and acknowledge generosity throughout the College of Science. Both participation and growth in participation may be recognized.
  • Criteria: Given to the department with the highest percentage faculty and staff members who have donated to any part of the University.
  • Eligible: Units eligible include eight academic departments, two statewide programs (NSL, NBMG), College staff, and Mackay staff.

College of Science Outstanding Classified Employee Award

  • Intent: To acknowledge a classified employee for outstanding service to the College, University, or community at large.
  • Criteria: Concern for the college and its goals; creative ideas to streamline efficiency, increase public awareness, and use resources wisely; attitude toward co-workers, graduate students, student workers, faculty, and the public; attitude toward work and quality of work; professional development, community service, academic involvement; contribution to the college, university, or community at large; other outstanding achievements.
  • Nominators: Members of the College of Science.
  • Eligible Nominees: Classified employees holding an appointment of at least 50% in a unit in the College of Science.

Mousel-Feltner Award for Excellence in Research and/or Creative Activity

  • Intent: Recognition of a single creative or research accomplishment by a faculty member in a particular year.
  • Nominators: Unit chairs and directors, faculty members. Only one nomination per nominator.
  • Eligible Nominees: Any tenured or tenure-track faculty member holding at least 0.5 FTE in the College of Science.

LeMay Award for Excellence in Teaching

  • Intent: To reward outstanding teaching.
  • Criteria: Flexibility and breadth of teaching, demonstration of quality and integrity in teaching, creativity and innovation in teaching, correlation of grades with student performance, consistency of student evaluations, student learning outcomes, outside activities that enrich teaching, intellectual challenge, ability to involve students, or other considerations.
  • Nominators: Students, department chairs.
  • Eligible Nominees: Academic faculty of any rank (TT or NTT) holding a permanent appointment of at least 50% in a unit within the College of Science. (Individuals may receive the award only once; those who have received a College-wide or University-level teaching award are not eligible.)

Hyung K. Shin Award for Excellence in Research

  • Intent: To reward outstanding research by faculty in the College of Science.
  • Criteria: The evaluation period for each award shall be the three calendar years immediately prior to the evaluation. While lifetime achievements may be considered as part of overall considerations of the committee and in the case of near “ties”, the award is primarily intended to reward outstanding achievements over a three-year period. Criteria for consideration may include the quality and impact of the research achievements, the quality of the publication media, and the number or magnitude of publications. Research that has not been published during the three-year evaluation period should not be included for consideration. External funding may be used as an indicator of outside recognition of the quality of research, but this award is primarily intended to reward outstanding scientific research achievements rather than large amounts of funding.
  • Nominators: Unit chairs and directors.
  • Eligible Nominees: Academic faculty of any rank (TT or NTT) holding a permanent appointment of at least 50% in a unit within the College of Science. (Individuals may receive the award only once; those who have received a college-wide or university-level research award are not eligible.)

Alan Bible Teaching Excellence Award

  • Intent: To recognize and reward outstanding teaching by faculty in the College of Liberal Arts and from the departments of Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics and Psychology in the College of Science.
  • Nominators: Students (do not need to be Liberal Arts or Science majors to participate).
  • Eligible Nominees: Any regular academic faculty member holding at least 0.5 FTE within one of the eligible departments may be considered for the award. Faculty members who have previously received the Alan Bible Teaching Award may not be considered for this award. Previous nominees and runners-up are eligible for nomination.
