Career Road Map
Choose two options to focus on
- Visit the Nevada Career Studio (NCS) at least once
- Discuss career goals, review and identify interests and skills using NCS Career Exploration and Preparation
- Complete Handshake and Micro-Internship Profiles (continuous process throughout your career)
- Explore Handshake/Micro-internships for internship opportunities within your field
- Develop and continuously update resume and portfolio of achievements
- Attend at least one career fair (offered in fall/spring semesters)
- Meet with advisors in CLA Student Center to discuss options within the Applied Liberal Arts
- Identify at least one on-campus mentor — build upon relationship in subsequent years (faculty, administrator, upper-class student)
Complete at least one internship during this time
- Visit the Nevada Career Studio (NCS)
- Update Handshake & Micro-Internship Profiles
- Search and apply for jobs/internships on Handshake/Micro-internships
- Update resume
- Continue exploring your interests, develop your brand, clarify your values
- Practice/refine interviewing skills (Big Interview)
- Attend at least one or two career-related programs: career fair, NCS event, workshops, panels, information session, etc.
- Introduce, create connections (network) with other students, faculty members, internship/job supervisor, alumni, NCS events, job shadow, join student clubs and organizations
- Build rapport with two or three faculty and professionals
- Update Handshake & Micro-Internship Profiles
Complete at least two or more internships
- Visit Nevada Career Studio (NCS) – build upon tasks from previous years
- Secure at least three or four faculty and professional references
- Participate in experiential learning opportunities by volunteering, job shadowing, internships and/or career conversations/interviews. Identify three people in fields you are considering.
- Continue to seek related professional experiences through Handshake/Micro-internships
- Research organizations to determine if their culture/values align with yours
- Decide if graduate or professional school are necessary for you to reach your career goals. If so, research programs, attend informational sessions and the Professional and Graduate School Fair, explore required application materials and prepare for required exams for graduate and professional schools (i.e. GRE, LSAT, GMAT, MCAT, etc.)
Complete at least two or more internships
- Visit the Nevada Career Studio (NCS) – continue tasks from previous years
- Prepare resumes, cover letters and practice interviews to be reviewed by NCS Career Mentors
- Apply for graduate, professional, or other post-baccalaureate programs
- Further review and research career choices and job market availability
- Request reference letters: faculty members, professional contacts, past/current employers
- Complete additional internships/Micro-internships (two to four should be completed by graduation)
- Attend professional conferences and conventions for networking opportunities
- Prepare a list of organizations you plan to contact for employment
- Research these organizations and have their websites bookmarked for employment
- Complete the First Destination Survey
