Practicum training program
Counseling Services (CS) typically offers part-time, ten-month (August 1 to May 31) practicum positions for psychology students in clinical or counseling PsyD or Ph.D. programs and for University of Nevada, Reno MSW program students in their foundation or concentration field placement years. Students from external MSW or other Master’s level mental health programs are also welcome to reach out if interested in training with University CS, and available positions will be assessed on a year-by-year basis.
The University CS practicum program provides more than just on-the-job practicum training. We offer high-quality training and supervision to help our practicum counselors deliver effective brief counseling to college students with an emphasis on culturally responsive practice and humility.
We provide comprehensive generalist training experience in university psychological services. Weekly structured didactic trainings are provided on clinical, professional, and diversity topics, and individual and group supervision are provided. Clinical responsibilities include providing individual and group counseling, providing initial evaluations, and conducting psychological assessments (optional for psych practicum). Activities in prevention and outreach are also available and encouraged.
