Services provided
Spectrum Learning Center specializes in providing behavioral intervention services that are rooted in applied behavior analysis (ABA), and currently offers two linked services, Skills Mapping and Rapid Skill Building. All services are center-based and take place at Spectrum Learning Center, located on the University of Nevada, Reno main campus.
Skills Mapping
Skills Mapping is an intensive person-centered assessment process that is designed to identify each client’s strengths and specific skill sets in which a learner has room to grow. Skills Mapping begins by identifying an immediate milestone (e.g., entering a general education classroom, joining a sports team, staying home alone, taking care of a pet) that is important to the client, then moves to assessing the client’s skills relative to that milestone. Skills Mapping takes four weeks and consists of:
- A pre-assessment interview with the client and their family/caregivers
- Four 50-minute assessment sessions with the client
- Two 50-minute parent/caregiver training sessions
- One de-brief meeting to discuss the results of the assessment
Following the completion of Skills Mapping, the client and their family/caregivers are provided with a detailed report that outlines the client’s strengths and areas for growth, as well as specific strategies that the client and caregivers can use to work towards the client’s goals. Another important outcome of Skills Mapping is to provide the client and their family with a tailored list of resources and referrals to support the client.
Skills Mapping is a newly developed assessment process that utilizes the genArete™ Learning System Assessment, and guides assessment across nine skill domains. Spectrum Learning center currently offers support to clients on domains related to Foundational Skills and Relationships/Community Living. For those seeking support in domains related to Independence and Modern Living, contact High Sierra Industries and the JUSTin Hope Foundation.

Rapid Skill Building
Rapid Skill Building is a focused intervention process and is intended to be a short-term service (i.e., 3 months). The purpose of Rapid Skill Building is to build on the client’s strengths to increase skills that are pivotal towards an immediate milestone that is important to the client (e.g., entering a general education classroom, joining a sports team, staying home alone, taking care of a pet). Rapid Skill Building is driven by the results of Skills Mapping; the clinical team works with the client and their family to identify 5 specific goals that will move the client closer to their identified milestone. Rapid Skill Building takes three months consisting of 24 hours of instruction:
- Two 50-minute sessions per week for 12 weeks
- Three parent check-in sessions (approximately one meeting every 8 sessions)
- One de-brief session at the conclusion of the Rapid Skill Building enrollment to provide resources and referrals for the client
Rapid Skill Building is intended to generate several important outcomes for the client and their family.
- Clients will leave Rapid Skill Building with a robust set of new skills that transfer into their every-day environment and for the family to have effective strategies to support the client in achieving their specific milestone.
- Following Rapid Skill Building, the clinical team will provide the client and their family with a tailored list of resources, strategies, and referrals that will support the client in their next setting or intervention (e.g., suggested IEP goals, service providers, community resources).
- Caregivers will leave Rapid Skill Building with an understanding of how ABA-based services can be utilized to support them and how to navigate ABA-based services to best meet their child’s needs.
