Jobs and internships

Searching for a job or internship is a process. Make sure you start with an inventory of your interests, skills, values, and personality. If you need help, check out our career exploration and preparation resources or meet with one of our career mentors during our drop-in hours. Below you will find strategies and job boards to help you with this process.

International students: Before you begin your job search, review the Office of International Students and Scholars resource page on employment, taxes and finances.

Warning: Protect yourself in the job search

As you job hunt, be sure to use caution. Students should perform due diligence when offering, applying for, or accepting off-campus employment, as you are doing so at your own risk. It is unusual for an employer to request information from applicants such as tax, banking, and social security information or to send checks or payments before an interview, offer of employment, or work hours are completed. Please be aware of emails that use University faculty and staff names but have non-University email addresses. If in doubt, you can forward the email to the Office of Information Technology (abuse@unr.edu) to have them check its authenticity. The Nevada Career Studio urges students to exercise careful judgment when responding to employer inquiries and to contact our office with questions or suspicions.

Job search strategies

  1. Based on your preparation, identify areas, job titles, and companies that appeal to you.
  2. Leverage your network and expand it by participating in career and professional events. This also includes connecting with employers, alumni, professors, classmates, etc..
  3. Use online job boards based on their purpose.

    2. For an opportunity to gain new skills in a short amount of time, try doing a micro-internship through Parker Dewey.
    3. For an off-campus job, internship, or full-time opportunity, Handshake is an excellent choice.

On-campus jobs: Workday

The University of Nevada, Reno uses Workday as their platform to offer students part-time jobs. Colleges and departments post job positions throughout the academic year. Check the job board on a regular basis to see what becomes available.

When looking for an on-campus job, make sure to select Student (Fixed Term) in the Job Type category.

Micro-internships

Here is a 7-minute video overview for students about how the Parker Dewey Micro-Internship platform works. The video also highlights tips for student success.

  1. Create your personal profile as completely and accurately as possible, especially your education and experience. Students with complete profiles are more likely to be selected. Please note: to see exclusive projects for University students only, you need add the University of Nevada, Reno to your Education section of the profile.
  2. Upload a resume and a link to your LinkedIn profile. Samples of your work from classes, internships, part-time jobs, etc can be helpful.
  3. The application process involves completing one or more short-answer questions. These questions typically also serve as the interview (companies may reach out to applicants to request an interview, but this is pretty rare).
  4. New opportunities are posted regularly and projects come and go very quickly.

It may take multiple attempts to land a project, please do not get discouraged. Stop by the Nevada Career Studio and speak with one of our Career Mentors to increase your chances on submitting a high quality application. Micro-Internships can lead to internship and full-time job offers, and is a great way to showcase your professional skills and gain experience to add to your resume. Lastly, please note that micro-internships through Parker Dewey require you to become independent contractors for the company, which may have tax implications. Please see their FAQs for more info.
