The Nevada Career Studio reviews employer accounts and job postings submitted through Handshake. We reserve the right to approve, edit, or decline any employer account or job posting at our discretion to ensure compliance with university recruiting policies, student safety considerations, and applicable federal and state laws. Approval of an employer account or job posting indicates only that it has met the Nevada Career Studio's review criteria at the time of approval and does not constitute an endorsement, recommendation, or guarantee by the University of Nevada, Reno or the Nevada Career Studio, nor should it be interpreted as a guarantee of employment conditions, employer practices, or future conduct.

Nevada Career Studio job posting services are provided free of charge to employers and Nevada students seeking employment. As part of the employer approval process, the Nevada Career Studio may verify business registration status, website information, and employer contact details. However, we do not conduct comprehensive investigations, financial reviews, criminal background checks, or other forms of extensive screening of employers or students.

Students and employers are encouraged to conduct their own due diligence, including requesting references, verifying credentials, and evaluating opportunities to determine an appropriate fit.

Equal employment opportunity expectations

By registering for a Handshake account, employers affirm that they are an equal opportunity employer and agree to comply with all applicable federal and state employment laws. Employment opportunities must be offered without discrimination based on race, religion, gender, national origin, age, sexual orientation, disability, or citizenship status (unless legally required). Employers must also comply with applicable federal and state laws regarding equal employment opportunity for protected veterans and other protected groups.

Job postings we do not approve

To protect students and maintain the integrity of the Handshake platform, the Nevada Career Studio will not approve or promote job postings that include:

• Positions requiring applicants to purchase products, services, or make a financial investment as a condition of employment
• Positions primarily performed in private residences, including but not limited to child care, nanny services, yard work, moving services, painting, home maintenance, or similar arrangements.
• Opportunities involving illegal activities under federal or Nevada state law
• Roles, industries, or working conditions that raise concerns related to student safety, legality, or ethical standards

The Nevada Career Studio reserves the right to deny, remove, or restrict any employer account or job posting that does not align with university policies, student safety considerations, or the educational mission of the University.

Compensation requirements

All paid positions must clearly disclose compensation and must meet or exceed applicable federal, state, and local wage requirements.

Per Nevada Career Studio policy, 100% commission-only roles are not posted or promoted on Handshake. Positions that include a base rate of pay (hourly wage or salary), in addition to commission or incentive-based compensation, are acceptable and may be approved.

The Nevada Career Studio does not approve or promote unpaid internships with for-profit employers. Unpaid internships with nonprofit organizations, government agencies, or educational institutions may be approved if they comply with U.S. Department of Labor internship guidelines and applicable federal and state laws. Interns must be gaining experience directly related to their major or academic coursework and receive ongoing professional development and mentorship.

Disclaimer of endorsement

The Nevada Career Studio provides Handshake as a platform for sharing employment opportunities but does not endorse, recommend, or guarantee any employer, organization, or job posting. Information shared by employers reflects their own views and does not represent those of the University of Nevada, Reno or the Nevada Career Studio. While employer accounts and job postings may be reviewed for compliance with university policies, approval should not be interpreted as an endorsement of an employer or opportunity.

Student safety and due diligence

The Nevada Career Studio is not responsible for wages, working conditions, safety, or any other aspects of off-campus employment. Students are encouraged to conduct due diligence when applying for or accepting employment opportunities and do so at their own risk.

It is unusual and inappropriate for employers to request sensitive personal information—such as banking details, tax documents, or Social Security numbers—prior to an interview, formal job offer, or completion of work. Students should independently research employers before applying, interviewing, accepting employment, or providing personal information.

Students are urged to exercise caution and report suspicious activity to the Nevada Career Studio.

Liability and external content

Users are responsible for exercising appropriate judgment when evaluating employers and employment opportunities available through Handshake. The University of Nevada, Reno is not responsible for disputes, losses, damages, or other issues arising from the use of the platform or participation in opportunities advertised through it.

Feedback and contact information

Students and employers are encouraged to report concerns, suspected fraudulent activity, policy violations, or feedback regarding their experience using Handshake.
