Unrecognized fraternities & sororities

An unrecognized fraternity or sorority is not affiliated with the University and will not be listed anywhere on the University’s list of recognized fraternities and sororities. These organizations do not receive any funding, support or advisement from the University. Unrecognized fraternities or sororities may not participate in any University-sponsored activity and may not utilize any property owned, operated, leased or managed by the University of Nevada, Reno.

In some cases, the University may have severed its relationship with these organizations due to significant and serious concerns over the health and safety of our students and university community, or the organization did not follow the proper procedures to become a recognized organization on campus, but chooses to continue to operate as an organization without the recognition of the University. 

In either case, the University strongly discourages maintaining or seeking membership in these organizations. 

The following organizations are currently unrecognized by the University:

• Alpha Tau Omega
• Kappa Alpha Order
• Lambda Chi Alpha
• Pi Kappa Phi
• Sigma Nu
• Tau Kappa Epsilon
• Theta Chi
• Zeta Psi

The following organization is in the process of resolving their outstanding conduct matters:

• Sigma Alpha Epsilon

The following organizations have outstanding conduct matters:

• Alpha Tau Omega
• Pi Kappa Phi
• Tau Kappa Epsilon
• Sigma Nu
