Join a fraternity or sorority under the Multicultural Greek Council

Joining a Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) fraternity or sorority at the University of Nevada, Reno is an opportunity to make lifelong connections, get involved on campus, and create meaningful memories with organizations founded on cultural values, identity, and heritage. MGC fraternities and sororities are values-based organizations committed to belonging, community service, leadership, and academics.

MGC Fraternities and Sororities

MGC is home to organizations that represent a wide range of identities, including, Latinx, Asian Pacific Islander, African American/Black, Native/Indigenous, Jewish, and multicultural communities. These organizations were created to uplift historically marginalized communities and celebrate diverse traditions but are not culturally exclusive. This means that membership is open to all students, regardless of background or cultural identity.

Why join an MGC Fraternity or Sorority?

Students choose MGC organizations for many reasons, including:

  • Cultural connections - engage in traditions, heritage and identity-affirming experiences.
  • Inclusive brotherhood and sisterhood - a supportive community open to all students.
  • Leadership development - opportunities to lead within your chapter, council, and campus.
  • Service and advocacy - many organizations focus on social justice initiatives and community empowerment.
  • Academic support - mentorship, accountability, and strong commitment to academic success.

How to join

  1. Attend MGC and Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life pre-recruitment events. The MGC and the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life host pre-recruitment events at the beginning of the Fall and Spring semesters. These events are casual, free and open to all interested students and intended to "welcome" you to campus life. You'll meet members from each organization, learn about their values, and get a feel for the community.
  2. Attend chapter events. After the first week of each semester, chapters will host their own "informational sessions" or "interest meetings" where they will provide an overview of their joining processes. Additionally, the chapters will host recruitment events such as barbeques, game nights, community service activities, and more. These events are intended to help you get to know members in a casual and relaxed atmosphere. Typically, chapters will have free food and beverages that all students can enjoy. We always say, "go for the food, stay for the siblinghood."
  3. Ask questions and explore your fit. Each fraternity and sorority has its own culture, set of values, and expectations. Take time to ask about all of the things that matter to you, such as academics, financial and time commitments, cultural programs, leadership opportunities, service, and new member/intake process.
  4. Receive and accept a bid. A bid is a formal invitation to join a fraternity or sorority. You may receive a bid from one or more chapters during the recruitment period. However, participation in recruitment does not guarantee you a bid. Once you accept your bid, you'll be expected to fill out an "affiliation card" with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.
  5. Participate in the intake process. Once you have officially accepted a bid to a chapter, you may begin the intake process. Intake typically includes educational sessions, leadership development, bonding opportunities, community services, fundraising, and learning about the organization's history and values. This process can take six to ten weeks.
  6. Become a member. After completing the intake process, students are initiated and welcomed as full members of the organization and begin participating in chapter activities, projects, programming, and are granted all of the rights, benefits, and privileges of the organization.
