Dr. Ben Ma’s research focuses on understanding and addressing various challenges in water and sanitization services, such as pathogen outbreaks and exposures of chemical contaminants, using innovative technologies and advanced research methods in environmental chemistry and microbiology, molecular biology and bioinformatics. Specifically, his research interests include:

  • Biological treatment systems for water treatment and water reuse applications
  • Pathogen control in water treatment and supply systems
  • Next-generation resilient water supply systems using ultraviolet (UV) based technologies as alternative disinfection solutions
  • Public space sanitization using emerging UV technologies
  • Source-to-tap water microbiome and its relationship to public health
