What to expect
The University of Nevada, Reno Writing & Speaking Center is dedicated to developing a community of writers. We offer free writing consultations to all undergraduate and graduate students. All consultations are 45 minutes. We offer consultation for academic, creative, career, business and personal writing as well as speeches and presentations. View our consultation policy.
Consultants are undergraduate and graduate students from a range of academic disciplines, including psychology, journalism, biology, writing, history, accounting, speech pathology and TESOL. Our consultants are prepared to help you during any stage of the writing process from brainstorming and development, planning and drafting, through organization, revision, and editing.
The University Writing & Speaking Center is a space where all students are valued as writers and critical thinkers. During consultations, students will be actively engaged in discussion and activity with their project.
We hope you will join us for some coffee, chocolate and writing talk.
University Writing & Speaking Center scope
- Our consultants are trained to read critically and to engage you in the process of developing and revising your writing and speech/presentation skills. Our goals are to help you develop competence and confidence with your writing and speech/presentation.
- We are not simply a drop-off editing service. We will certainly discuss sentence-level issues and proofreading and editing strategies, but we believe students should make all final decisions in their projects.
- We provide all students who visit the University Writing & Speaking Center with a summary report of their consultation. Reports can be e-mailed to professors for verification and feedback upon request of the student.
- Consultants cannot predict or explain grades received on assignments. We encourage you to speak directly to your instructor if you have questions about grades or assignment assessments.
