Students often find their transition to college is a challenging experience. With this challenge in mind, NevadaFIT provides additional support to its participants, as they navigate the week of NevadaFIT.
Students are assigned in "NevadaFIT Packs," a group of six students in the same NevadaFIT boot camp. Each pack has a Pack Mentor, an upperclassman within the major who has demonstrated success as a student. Many of our Pack Mentors have been past NevadaFIT participants, so they understand the value of the NevadaFIT experience and can serve as a guide to their Pack members. Packs and Pack Mentors are an important part of the NevadaFIT experience and the intensive transition to the university.
This is their Pack throughout the week of NevadaFIT. We encourage our Pack members to establish close relationships with their mentors and with the other members in their Pack. These relationships help build a supportive network for one another as they experience the same challenges, and celebrate their successes, throughout NevadaFIT.
Most Pack members are freshmen in the same major or college as the mentor, but some may be undeclared/undecided if they are participating in a program that accepts undeclared/undecided students.
NevadaFIT Camps and Skill Sessions
Each NevadaFIT camp designs their own schedule of activities they feel will benefit a student in their college. Colleges offer major-specific lectures taught by tenured faculty. Students take exams and/or are assigned projects related to these lectures.
Working in their Packs, students attend study sessions and participate in activities with their Pack mentor. They are assigned time to complete homework at the Tutoring Center and other support service locations on campus.
NevadaFit camps also use skill sessions led by various university officials (Study Tips and Tricks, Financial Literacy, Note-taking Skills, Mindfulness, Cultural Competency, Fitness Class, etc.) during the week of NevadaFIT.
NevadaFIT Core Class
Math was identified as the class students struggle with the most in their first semesters. Most camps have students participate in a math class during NevadaFIT. Students are placed in the NevadaFIT math class that matches the course and professor they will have in the Fall Semester. Accuplacer math class changes will be honored for tests taken on or before August 4, 2019 for NevadaFIT math placements only. See Accuplacer for more information.
