JOUR 635 - Mass Comm Research Methods

This course concentrates on the research process in mass communication. It is designed to provide you with a broad understanding of research concepts, processes, techniques, and strategies of media research. We will examine research conducted in both the professional and academic setting, helping you to become intelligent consumers of social science research. The course will include instruction in quantitative and qualitative methods, covering both research design and data collection. This multimedia sports broadcasting course is designed to allow students to practice their audio/video skills by reporting on local teams and sports through a wide variety of assignments, both in and outside of the class. The assignments will encompass everything from podcasts to TV packages, minidocs, a team documentary, stand-ups, and play-by-play, to pre/post-game reports. The assignments and lectures in class reflect various disciplines in sports reporting, covering roles from the reporter and anchor to the sideline analyst, host, and sports talk reporter.

MICR 350 - Microbial Genomics & Genetics

The field of microbial genomics has grown exponentially since the first genome sequence was determined in 1995. In this course we will review how knowledge of microbial genomes, and of the mechanisms that contribute to genetic variation, have shaped our understanding of microbial evolution, symbiosis, and pathogenesis. The use of such understanding to develop novel therapeutic and/or preventative regimes will also be covered, as will other applications of genomic sequence data.
