Summary

Edw Martinez is Art Department Chair Emeritus, retiring after serving 36 years at the University from 1969-2005, where he was Associate Professor and Area Head of Printmaking. Martinez has been creating both two and three-dimensional art for a very long time. While primarily known for his multi-media prints/monotypes and site-situated sculptural installations, he returned to working with clay after a thirty-year hiatus. He has participated in more than two hundred group and one-person exhibitions at the regional, national and international level, including a traveling print exhibit in all fifty U.S. states. His art is in numerous private, corporate and public collections. Martinez has printed professionally at the Tamarind Institute (NM), Kala Institute (CA) Instituto de Artes Graficas de Oaxaca (Mexico), Slade School of Art and Camden Art Center (both in London). He has been an artist-in-residence at the Kimmel Hardin Nelson Art Center, Jentel Foundation and the McNamara Foundation. He attended Illinois Wesleyan University and is a graduate of the University of Nevada, Reno and the University of Iowa’s renowned Iowa Print Group. Martinez is the recipient of the Nevada Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Visual Arts. He is based in Virginia City, NV, and Reno, with seasonal studios in Las Vegas and Mohawk, CA.
