How to use your Chapter 1606 and 30 benefits
- Students must apply for VA educational benefits on the GI Bill® website.
- Once you are approved for VA educational benefits, you will receive a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) in the mail. Additionally, you will need your DD-214 member copy 4. You will need to scan and email a copy of both to veteranservices@unr.edu.
- If you have used your benefits at a previous institution, you can download an updated copy of your Education Enrollment Status at the eBenefits website.
- If you have any questions about VA educational benefits, contact Chai Cook at chaicook@unr.edu or (775) 682-5935. Her office is located on the second floor of the Fitzgerald Student Services building.
- Chapters 1606 and 30 benefits include a monthly stipend based on enrollment status. As such, the student is responsible to pay for their own tuition. The VA will post current pay rate for Chapter 1606 and 30 students on the GI Bill website.
- VA will prorate your monthly stipend to start on the first day of the term and also to stop on the last day of the term. For example, if the term starts on August 24, you will be paid for August 24-31 for the month of August. For budgeting purposes, a student will not receive a full monthly stipend until the end of the first full month. Keep in mind that the first and last month of the term are always prorated.
- Since Chapters 1606 and 30 students are responsible for their own tuition and fees to the university, Veteran Services offers a four-part payment plan for students using VA benefits on campus at no cost. If you are interested, please inquire with Veteran Services.
- Nevada National Guard members can use the tuition waiver concurrently with VA benefits. Please note that the tuition waiver should be submitted to the Cashier’s Office, not Veteran Services. For more on the tuition waiver, please visit our page on Nevada National Guard State Benefits.
- If you are currently classified as an out-of-state resident, please let us know so we can work with the University to have non-resident fees waived.
Nevada National Guard offers a tuition waiver benefit. You must complete a new tuition waiver every semester that you intend to use this benefit.
- Visit the Nevada National Guard website.
- Navigate to the middle of the homepage to the Education Benefits heading.
- Select Tuition Waiver Form and download it as a PDF.
- Fill out Parts A and B. Part A includes your personal information, and Part B is a statement of understanding.
- Email the waiver with parts A and B completed to your readiness NCO prior to the deadline they established with your unit. Be proactive – the University has an additional deadline for submitting the tuition waiver. Generally, the deadline for the Cashier’s Office is three weeks after the first day of the term.
- Once your readiness NCO returns the completed and signed waiver to you, email it to the Cashier’s Office at cashiersoffice@unr.edu. Please do not submit the waiver to Veteran Services; this could delay the processing of your waiver.
One stipulation of Chapters 1606 and 30 is that the student must verify their enrollment with the VA on the last day of every school month via W.A.V.E. The VA will hold your stipend until you complete this step. Here are the steps to verify every month.
- Call W.A.V.E. at 1-877-823-2378 on the last day of every month of school.
- Press #1 when prompted.
- Enter your VA file number followed by the # sign. Your VA file number is your Social Security number.
- Enter your five-digit zip code.
After this, your enrollment will be verified, and you will receive your monthly stipend.
- Your National Guard readiness NCO is the primary point of contact regarding state benefits. Please visit the Nevada National Guard State Benefits webpage for more information about tuition waiver/textbook reimbursement.
- If the student is denied for 1606 benefits by VA, they should first contact their readiness NCO to ensure that they are listed as MOS-qualified by the state.
- If a deployment/activation interrupts the semester, we recommend that you complete a leave of absence form with Admissions and Records in order to avoid reapplying to the university and maintain active student status while away. The form is found in the Admissions and Records forms section of the University website.
