The University of Nevada, Reno is the land grant institution of Nevada. Serving over 18,000 students, this doctoral granting research institution is nestled at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and less than 50 miles from beautiful Lake Tahoe. Opened in November 2007, the Joe Crowley Student Union serves as the heart of the campus. Known affectionately as "The Joe" to the university community, the facility is ideal for creative programming and building a strong campus community. The Joe Crowley Student Union measures over 167,000 square feet and meets the standards of a Silver LEED certified building. The Union has numerous meeting spaces, a grand ballroom, and a 220-seat digital surround sound high definition movie theater. Retail services include 9 food vendors highlighted by a sit down non-alcohol sports grille, a bank branch, a two-story bookstore owned by the students, and other services. The Center for Student Engagement, the Graduate Student Association and the Center for Student and Cultural Diversity are also located in the facility. The Student Union staff collaborates with others to build community on campus. The Union strives to provide maximum opportunity for self-realization and individual growth by providing cultural, social, recreational and intellectual experiences.
