Financial support

The department offers two main forms of financial support for graduate students:

Assistantships: Assistantships may be either teaching assistantships or research assistantships. If you are selected for an assistantship, you will receive additional details about your funding package at that time.

Teaching assistants work under the supervision of department faculty and may be asked to teach recitation sections or laboratories, help with grading and develop course materials and exams. Research assistants also work with faculty and may be asked to conduct experiments, implement prototype systems, develop new theories, and attend conferences or publish work in scholarly journals.

Fellowships: Two competitive fellowships are available for new doctoral students, providing up to three years of support. Fellowships offer a stipend of $23,000 and an additional $7,000 to cover tuition, health insurance and other fees. To be eligible for a fellowship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Undergraduate GPA of at least 3.50
  • Combined GRE scores of at least 309 (1200 on the old scale)
  • Quantitative GRE score of at least 159 (750 on the old scale)
  • TOEFL score of at least 600 (international students only)
  • Evidence of previous research experience and academic achievement

To keep your fellowship, you must show good academic performance and progress during each term of the award, maintain full-time enrollment in the program, and submit a research proposal by the end of your first year, with satisfactory progress shown each year after that.
