French and Spanish Major Exit Examination

One to two weeks after the deadline for applying for graduation, you will receive an informational email with further instructions on the steps to take the Exit Examination. You will also be added to a Canvas course containing all of this information, as well as the space where you will upload your essay for the BA Assessment Committee to grade. Below you will find the structure and logistics of the exam.

1. Avant STAMP 4S Exam Requirement

To assess program outcomes, graduating students take a third-party, adaptive, online proficiency exam measuring reading, writing, speaking, and listening. This helps us verify that our curricula prepare students to perform at or above ACTFL's Intermediate High level (score of 5).

  • You must take the exit exam to graduate, but a specific score is not required. Completing the exam satisfies the requirement.
  • The exam is not timed; most students take 2.5-3 hours.
  • Global Seal of Biliteracy: If you score a 5 or above in each skill, you qualify for an official higher-education certificate.
    • A seal for your diploma and a unique serial number you can list on LinkedIn. If you qualify for a seal, you will also receive a digital copy of your certificate indicating your level of fluency:
      • Functional Fluency: Score of 5 or higher on all sections (Intermediate-Mid)
      • Working Fluency: Score of 7 or higher on all sections (Advanced-Low)

Exam window: Last two weeks of classes.
Registration links: Will be shared in the informational email and in the Canvas course.
Sample test: Available here.

2. Essay Requirement

As an additional writing proficiency measure (aligned with University assessment priorities), please upload a revised, proofread research paper written for one of your 400-level French and/or Spanish courses that best reflects your language skills.

  • Upload your essay to Canvas, where you will also find the evaluation rubric.
  • Submission deadline: During the last week of classes.
  • The WLL Assessment Committee will evaluate your essay using the rubric provided in Canvas.

3. Student Experience Survey Requirement

The Department of World Languages and Literatures invites you to complete a short, anonymous survey about your experience as a French or Spanish major. Your feedback is very valuable and will help us continue improving our programs, teaching practices, and student learning outcomes.

The survey will be available in Canvas.

Additional information

The Exit Exam milestone will appear on your MyNEVADA dashboard two weeks after the application for graduation deadline. It is updated once the department has received confirmation that all steps above have been completed. Please contact us if you have any questions about your status.
