Summary
Dr. Barnett is a molecular and reproductive pharmacologist investigating how uterine smooth muscle transitions from quiescence to labor, and how those pathways can be targeted to prevent preterm birth. His work centers around developing safer tocolytics, which are drugs that halt premature labor to prevent preterm birth. His laboratory combines human myometrial tissue, molecular pharmacology, organ-bath physiology, and animal models to study OXTR signaling, Cx43 gap junctions, mechanosensitive ion channels, calcium handling, and protein S-nitrosation. His work identified novel Piezo1 dysregulation in preterm-labor myometrium and he developing a new class of small molecule drugs that are aimed at halting labor while reducing fetal exposure to the compounds.
