Mburia-Mwalili's research interests include maternal child health, birth defects, social support, and intimate partner violence.

Prior to joining the University of Nevada, Reno, Mburia-Mwalili worked as a Biostatistician in the Office of Public Health Informatics and Epidemiology, Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health. In addition, Dr. Mburia-Mwalili has international research and teaching experience having taught at Egerton University, Njoro, Kenya and malaria and intestinal helminths research in Kenya funded by the World Health Organization.
