Program structure and timeline

The HSTS microcredential consists of four courses designed to build skills progressively:

  • Course 1: Basics of Healthcare Simulation (required first course)
  • Course 2: Creating a Realistic Simulation Experience
  • Course 3: Operating and Maintaining the Simulation Environment
  • Course 4: Simulation Practicum

Courses 1–3 (Online)

  • Fully online and asynchronous
  • Designed to be completed over approximately 6 weeks per course
  • Each course must be completed within 60 days of registration
  • After completing Course 1, Courses 2 and 3 may be taken in any order

Course 4: Practicum (optional)

  • Available after successful completion of Courses 1–3
  • Requires approximately 120 hours of applied experience, which may include a combination of direct and indirect simulation-related activities Provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a real or simulated setting
  • Practicum experiences may be completed through partner sites or other approved settings
  • Additional details regarding placement and site coordination will be provided prior to enrollment in the practicum

Digital credentials

As you progress, you will earn digital badges that demonstrate your skills:

  • Course Completion Badges
    Earned after each course
  • Foundational Credential
    Awarded after completing courses 1–3
Signals readiness for entry-level simulation roles
  • Foundational Credential with Practical Experience
Awarded after completing all four courses, including the optional practicum
    Demonstrates applied, hands-on experience

Badges can be shared on LinkedIn, resumes and in professional portfolios.
