Bienvenidos! We are excited to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month with you!

National Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual celebration of the history and culture of the U.S. Latine/o/a/x and Hispanic communities. The event spans from September 15 to October 15 annually throughout the United States. This month commemorates how Hispanic communities have influenced and contributed to American society.
The Orvis School of Nursing (OSN) recognizes the many nurses of Hispanic heritage who contribute to healthcare across our state! The OSN also recognizes the Nevada Hispanic Nurses Association, which is committed to advancing the health of Nevada Hispanic communities and leading, promoting, and advocating educational, professional, and leadership opportunities for Hispanic nurses in Nevada.

Analysis

According to a 2020 analysis by the National Library of Medicine, of the 3 million registered nurses, only 5.4% were Hispanic. Recent U.S. Census data show that 18.9% of Americans identify as Hispanic or Latine/o/a/x, which means there is a significant underrepresentation of Hispanic and Latine/o/a/x nurses in the workforce. Despite this disparity, many influential Hispanic and Latino/a nurses have paved the way for future nursing generations or are actively leading nursing today.
