M.A.T.H. Program Overview
Degree requirements
Credits (30 total)
- Up to 9 credits may be applied from prior Graduate Special coursework
- HIST 783: Historiography (3 credits), taken during the first semester
- One additional 700-level historiography course in the student's field, taken during the second or third semester
- One 600- or 700-level course in the College of Liberal Arts outside the Department of History (3 credits)
- Two graduate-level courses in the College of Education and Human Development (minimum 6 credits)
- HIST 795: Comprehensive Examination (1-3 credits), taken during the final semester

- Comprehensive examination (bibliographic essay)

M.A. fields
- First field: Examination

Time limit
All degree requirements must be completed within six years immediately preceding the awarding of the degree.
Thesis committee
- Faculty advisor
- One additional faculty member from the Department of History
- One faculty member from outside the Department of History
Typical schedule
Semester 1 (Fall)
- HIST 783: Historiography
- Two courses related to the student's fields of study
Semester 2 (Spring)
- Three courses related to the student's fields of study, including:
- Preferably a 700-level HIST historiography course
- A graduate-level course in the College of Education and Human Development
- Declaration of faculty advisor
- Program of Study meeting at the end of the semester
Semester 3 (Fall)
- Three courses related to the student's fields of study
- Program of Study meeting at the beginning of the semester
- Prospectus colloquium at the end of the semester
Semester 4 (Spring)
- One course related to the student's fields of study
- HIST 795 (2 credits)
- Application for graduation submitted to the Graduate School (due mid-semester)
- Final oral presentation
- Submission of the Notice of Completion form
