The bachelor’s degree in mathematics at the University of Nevada, Reno is offered as a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science, with specializations available in applied mathematics, discrete mathematics and operations research, and statistics. You complete coursework in calculus, linear algebra, statistics and analysis while strengthening analytical, logical and problem-solving skills. The Bachelor of Arts provides a broad liberal arts foundation, while the Bachelor of Science offers a more intensive focus on mathematics, statistics, computing and science. Graduates are prepared to apply mathematical models and concepts across a wide range of careers or pursue advanced study.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Nevada, Reno provides a strong foundation in mathematical reasoning, data analysis and problem-solving. Students can pursue interests in pure or applied mathematics and statistics while gaining skills valued in data science, finance, technology, research and education.

The applied mathematics specialization is offered for both the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree paths. An applied mathematician conducts research in partnership with the fields of medicine, engineering, finance, industry and more with the goal of solving a specific problem in the real world. Pure mathematics often bleeds over into the application side of things—the fields are not siloed from one another. Sub-research cateogories include game theory and operations research; applied mathematics, varied applications; and advanced computational methods.

The statistics specialization is offered for both the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree paths. Statistics is the study of the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of data. It deals with all aspects of this, including the planning of data collection in terms of the design of surveys and experiments. Sub-research categories include the science of data collection and analysis.
