The Department of English offers programs of study leading to the degree of bachelor of arts in English, master of arts in English, master of fine arts in English, and doctor of philosophy in English. There are different specializations within each of these degree programs. At the undergraduate level, these include literature, language and linguistics, writing, and a dual-degree program with the College of Education; at the graduate level, they include literature, rhetoric and composition, public engagement, and linguistics. The department also offers a number of undergraduate minors in English; courses designed to fulfill requirements for students from across the campus; and literature, language, and writing courses open to non-majors. The department's programs provide a strong liberal arts education; prepare students for careers in education, writing, business, publishing, public service, and many other fields; and enable them to compete nationally for admission to graduate programs in the humanities or professional fields such as law and communications.
