My first-generation story
Have you ever visited Hawaii Airport? It holds a special place in my heart as it's where my family and I encountered a kind soul who helped us when we were in need. I came to America when I was 12 years old with my mom and two other siblings. We were the first ones in our family to leave the Philippines. We flew across the country to have better opportunities in America, but we got stuck in Hawaii. We had no food, no money, and no phones, but luckily there was a man who helped us. This experience has deeply influenced my desire to help others without having to ask for help myself. I want to give someone that opportunity the same as that man gave us, is to live the life we deserve. I am the first in our family to ever step into a four-year college program. My mom had always wanted me to become a healthcare professional, but with my passion for helping those in need, empathy, compassion and to develop a deep curiosity of the human body and how it functions, I knew I wanted to become a Physician Assistant someday.
As a first-generation college student, I understand the financial challenges that come with pursuing higher education. It's been tough to juggle tuition, school supplies, personal bills, and supporting my grandmother's medication in the Philippines. Despite these hardships, I've remained dedicated and focused on my goals. I strongly believe in the power of positive thinking and manifestation. I'm incredibly grateful for the support I've received through the Golden Scholar Program and First in the Pack at the University of Nevada, Reno. It means a lot to me to have resources available to help me succeed. I'm proud to be a first-generation student, and I'm determined to make a positive impact in the field of healthcare.
