Nevada Center for Water Resiliency

The Nevada Center for Water Resiliency (NCWR) is a premier research center housed within the Nevada Water Innovation Institute (NWII) at the University of Nevada, Reno. The NCWR is dedicated to advancing water security, sustainability and reuse through cutting-edge research, technology development and strategic collaborations.

As a key contributor to water resiliency efforts in Northern Nevada and around the country, NCWR plays a pivotal role in addressing emerging water challenges, including both potable and non-potable reuse, treatment and removal of emerging contaminants and resource recovery. The center works closely with municipalities, industries, and military institutions to develop innovative solutions for sustainable water management.

Mission

NCWR’s mission is to advance research, develop innovative technologies and foster collaborations that enhance water resiliency through sustainable reuse and resource recovery. The center aims to create a future where water sustainability is ensured for all communities and industries.

Vision

To be a globally recognized leader in water resiliency research, driving technological advancements in water reuse, contaminant detection and infrastructure innovation. The NCWR envisions a world where water is managed efficiently and sustainably, ensuring security for generations to come.

Specific research goals

  • Developing and testing advanced water treatment technology for potable water reuse
  • Ensuring safe, reliable water supplies
  • Recovering resources from wastewater streams
  • Detection and treatment methods for emerging contaminants (e.g., per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as “forever chemicals”
  • Reclaiming non-traditional water for agricultural reuse
  • Reducing the water footprint for mining
