Resources for pre-professional students

This six-week, 1 credit course is offered in the fall semester to students that are interested in pursuing a professional career in healthcare (medical doctor, physical therapist, occupational therapist, physician assistant, etc.). This course will help students identify resources available to them and give students a better understanding of the requirements necessary to be a successful candidate to a graduate program. Students will work on the development of a well-informed action plan in preparation for applying to health professions schools/programs.

For high school students, high school counselors, and pre-med parents.

One-hour presentation giving high school students an overview of preparatory information regarding tips to consider, coursework, and other activities of exploration while working towards a college pre-med journey. Great for any student who might be curious about what it will be like in college as a pre-med student.

For any new, first-time pre-med/pre-health interested students.

30-minute summer orientation presentation covering general pre-med/pre-health academic, extracurricular, and student resource information, with next steps processes for new students to follow if pre-med/pre-health is the college direction of choice. Presentation will introduce students to peer pre-professional advisors and staff advisors. 

For new, first-time students interested in pre-med or pre- PT/OT professional tracks.

These one-hour pre-professional webinars will give you essential information regarding coursework and other activities that you should complete in order to be considered a competitive student in your pre-professional track. Presentation discusses medical school requirements and admissions information relevant to programs nationwide (not just UNR Med). You must complete a webinar to be able to schedule appointments with the pre-professional staff.

Note: Students who have attended an in-person information session, or are enrolled in/have completed ACE 101, do not need to complete a webinar.

During this presentation, students will learn more about the AAMC’s 15 core competencies and understand how medical schools assess applicant competencies in their application. Learn how you can demonstrate your non-clinical activities and experiences to illustrate proficiencies across multiple competencies and articulate ways to support your application. 

Learning how to write your personal statement to highlight your unique story is critical in the application process. Learn effective approaches to set yourself apart and understand the “do’s and don’ts” of this essential part of your application. 

How does AMCAS/ACCOMAS/CASPER work?  This presentation gives prospective pre-med and pre-PA applicants an understanding of what documents and materials will be needed in order to apply to allopathic, osteopathic, and physician assistant programs through their centralized application platform. Learn how to compile all of your materials through this 1-hour presentation which will be co-facilitated by successful matriculants. 

How do PTCAS and OTCAS work? This presentation gives prospective pre-PT and OT applicants a lens to see what documents and materials will be needed in order to apply to PT and OT programs through their centralized application service (CAS). Learn how to compile all of your application materials through this 1-hour presentation which will be co-facilitated by successful matriculants. 

How can I prepare for the Multiple Mini Interview? This 1-hour presentation provides an overview of what to expect in the MMI interview, with demonstrations of MMI’s scenarios addressing ethical decisions, acting, and collaborative prompts. This presentation is co-facilitated with successful medical students. 

This 30-minute presentation gives prospective pre-law students an understanding of what core competencies, skills, and experiences are necessary to help them become competitive applicants. Learn about LSAC.org and important resources for preparing for the LSAT. 

This 30-minute presentation gives an overview of various ideas and ways a pre-health student can build their experiences and activities during the summer.
