What?

Mrs. Dorothy Lemslson is offering TWELVE K-6 teachers in the Washoe County School District the opportunity to complete a Master's degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Math and Science at the University of Nevada, Reno. Her gift will cover the cost of tuition for the duration of the program.

Please note that this K-6 Math/Science Cohort is specifically designated as a teacher research cohort. If you are admitted to this cohort, you will automatically be signing up to (a) be thinking about your current classroom practice and making changes through action research (b) be a part of a larger UNR teacher research project emphasizing math and science education, (c) be willing to take on a leadership role in math/science to help other teachers improve their instruction in school or district.

Goals of the Program

  • Develop teacher leaders in Math/Science
  • Develop capacity to improve math/science learning of students in the distract
  • Provide teachers with cutting edge research and tools to improve instruction

When?

Spring 2009 to Spring 2010

What are your responsibilities to the program?

  • You are expected to follow all application procedures for the University of Nevada, Reno Graduate School and to the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning for the Master's program and pay your own application fee.
  • You are expected to register for cohort courses each semester in a timely manner. Please refer to the University of Nevada, Reno website academic calendar for registration information.
  • You are expected to follow the courses in the sequence that is provided so that you will remain with your cohort.
  • You are expected to use the Lemelson WebCT information page for announcements and listings of required courses and course call numbers once admitted to the program.
  • You are expected to pay for books for all of your classes.
  • You are expected to complete your "Program of Study" form by the end of your first year in the program. These forms are available at the University of Nevada, Reno Graduate School website.
  • You are responsible for all paperwork pertaining to your degree. The University of Nevada, Reno Graduate School and the University of Nevada, Reno Office of Admissions and Records can answer your questions pertaining to the University of Nevada, Reno paperwork.
  • If you drop out of the program, you are required to repay the University of Nevada, Reno Foundation for the courses you have completed. (Each teacher signs an agreement with details about repayment if she or he cannot complete the Master's program.)

Selection Criteria

  • High interest in Math / Science
  • Leadership potential
  • Interest in serving as a Math / Science Teacher leader in school and district (provide teachers with assistance, professional development, work with district coordinators)
  • Administrator Support (need letter of support)
  • Meet admission requirements for the University of Nevada, Reno Masters Program (Curriculum, Teaching & Learning and Graduate School)
  • Cohort 2 or more teachers from a school
  • Cohort of 3 or more at a school
