Mariluz Garcia was born and raised in Elko, Nevada, but her father is from Spain, and her mother is from Mexico. After high school, she moved to Reno and attended the University of Nevada, Reno and received a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education, a Master's Degree in School Counseling, and is currently working towards a Ph.D. in Equity and Diversity. Mariluz has 14 years experience working with low-income, first-generation students in a variety of settings. She was an Americorps volunteer for one year in Colorado, worked with Dean's Future Scholars as a graduate assistant for three years, was a middle school counselor at Dilworth STEM Academy for four years, and an elementary school counselor at Glenn Duncan STEM Academy for one year. Mariluz has had the honor and pleasure of serving as the Director of the Dean's Future Scholars program for five years.
