Lemelson STEM M.S. Program Goals

The goal of the Lemelson STEM program is to develop expert teachers in STEM education with an emphasis in teaching math and science and integrating engineering and technology concepts. The first year we focus on shifting teaching practice toward standard based approaches.

Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core Mathematics Standards support the learning of ALL students. This process involves re-conceptualizing and refining how they design the physical space, develop classroom routines, plan lessons, and facilitate discussions. The second year will focus on refining instruction skills and developing leadership skills to support other teachers. Our work aligns with the Nevada Governor’s and legislature’s vision in increasing participation and interest in STEM education.

What are your responsibilities to the program?

  • You are expected to follow all application procedures for UNR Graduate School and to the department of Elementary Education for the master’s program and pay your own application fee.
  • You are expected to register for cohort courses each semester in a timely manner. Please refer to the University website academic calendar for registration information.
  • You are expected to follow the courses in the sequence that is provided so that you will remain with your cohort.
  • You are expected to pay for books, all course fees and all mandatory university fees for all of your classes. The Dorothy Lemelson Foundation pays tuition only for the classes.
  • You are expected to complete your “Program of Study” form by the end of your first year in the program. These forms are available at University Graduate School Website.
  • You are responsible for all paperwork pertaining to your degree. The University Graduate School and UNR Office of Admissions and Records can answer your questions pertaining to University paperwork.
  • Immunizations for COVID, MMR and TD are required for all students. Make sure you are up to date before the program starts.
  • If you drop out of the program, you are required to repay the University Foundation for the courses you have completed. The purpose of this is to ensure that you are committed to following through with the program. (Each teacher signs an agreement with details about repayment if she or he can’t complete the master’s program.)

What is the program's responsibilities to you?

  • You will receive high-quality experiences and knowledge to enhance your teaching of the STEM disciplines.
  • Your tuition (not fees or books) will be paid.
  • You will have a faculty advisor affiliated with the program.
  • You will be intellectually challenged and emotionally engaged with standards based (CCSS and NGSS) STEM learning.

  • Verify when you are applying that the code will be MS-EED.
  • We encourage multiple applicants from the same school although not required.

Application Materials Required

  1. Completed application form (Above)
  2. 2-3 page essay that addresses: Why are you interested in applying to this program? Include on your statement what special skills do you have in K-8 education as a teacher with a focus on a specific content area or integration of content (e.g. science, mathematics or STEM), and professional contributions have you made to your school and/or district?
  3. A resume emphasizing credentials and experiences relevant to this graduate program. Include Contact information; name, mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address, all post-secondary school experience, institutions, dates attended, majors, and degrees completed, work history relevant to this application and relevant experiences
  4. Signed Disposition Form (This document is in the Masters of Science (M.S.) in Elementary Education Manual)
  5. Two letters of recommendation. At least one recommendation must be from your principal or supervisor who has directly observed your work with children. The other recommendation may be from a teaching colleague or someone that works with you in a formal / informal setting with children. Recommendations should provide detailed descriptions of professional qualities, teaching abilities and potential for leadership.
  6. Copy of teaching license (K-8) if applicable
  7. Immunizations
  8. If your GPA is below 3.0, a copy of your GRE scores taken within the past 5 years
