Summary
Dr. Emily R. Koren is an experienced researcher, evaluator, and disability justice scholar. She is a former Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Southern California’s Pullias Center for Higher Education, where she worked on the NSF-funded Faculty, Academic Careers and Environments (FACE) project. Dr. Koren earned her PhD in Social and Comparative Analysis in Education from the University of Pittsburgh, with a minor in quantitative research methods and a certificate in Latin American Social and Public Policy. Dr. Koren received the University of Pittsburgh School of Education Alumni Society’s Outstanding Dissertation Award for her dissertation, Social Support at the Intersection of Minoritized Identities: An Exploration of the Ego Networks of Latinxs with Disabilities at One Hispanic-Serving Institution.
As a multiply disabled disability justice scholar and evaluator, Dr. Koren’s research examines the intersections of ethnoracial and disability identities, with particular attention to social support, interdependence, and collective responsibility. Her work seeks to disrupt normative understandings of mental health and learning disabilities. Additional research interests include evaluation, social network analysis, postsecondary teaching and learning ecologies, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, and survey development.
Before entering academia, Dr. Koren taught high school Spanish and social studies in Truckee, California, and Durango, Colorado. She is originally from Buffalo, New York, and is a former Division I women’s ice hockey player.
