In the statistics minor, you'll study the basic principles of statistics and probability and learn standard techniques for analyzing and reasoning with data. A foundation in calculus provides the base of the statistics minor.
Once you are equipped with the basic mathematical tools you'll need, specific courses in statistics focus on understanding probability and performing data analysis. Students also learn how to use programming languages, such as R, that are widely used for statistical analysis.
Additional electives in statistics round out your coursework in the minor.
Undergraduate research is an opportunity to build your academic and research skills as well as develop professional relationships with faculty and graduate student mentors. Many undergraduate research positions also come with a salary. Students minoring in statistics bring a valuable skill set to almost any research project, as they are equipped to analyze numerical data and understand its implications. Undergraduate research projects at the University include both the opportunity to work with faculty as well as funded project by community partners and even do international research in partnership with the University Study Abroad Consortium.

Statisticians may be employed in the health care industry, analyzing patient outcomes or forecasting disease trends. In the technology industry, statisticians may help refine algorithms or build models that predict consumer behavior. In the life sciences, statistics can help researchers or policy makers understand the impact of various behaviors or policies on the environment. And in the business world, a knowledge of statistics can help a company understand market trends and adjust accordingly.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for statisticians are projected to grow 33 percent from 2020 to 2030, which is much faster than average. The increasing reliance on and availability of data is expected to fuel much of this growth. Many jobs in statistics require a master's degree, but an undergraduate education can help you get started in an entry-level position.
