The Department offers the Master of Science degree in Geography and Land Use Planning Policy. Students should read the Graduate School section of the catalog and request information from the Department.

Master of Science in Geography Download Curriculum

A number of programs and institutions are affiliated with the Department's graduate program. The Desert Research Institute, an internationally recognized center for atmospheric science, biology, energy, quaternary science, and water resources research has close ties with the geography department. Exceptional facilities for the analysis of remotely sensed data are available to geography students through a program at the Mackay School. A wide variety of institutions are located within campus which provide valuable resources to graduate students, including: the Biological Resources Research Center, the Nevada Agricultural Experimental Station, the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology, the Nevada Historical Society, the Nevada Humanities Committee, the University of Nevada Press, the Bureau of Business and Economic Research, the National Judicial College, and offices for the U.S. Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Center and the U.S. Geological Survey.

Land Use Planning Policy (LUPP) Download Curriculum

In cooperation with several other departments, the geography department participates in the interdisciplinary Master of Science degree with a major in land use planning policy. The curriculum provides a foundation in planning tools and methods, along with a thorough analysis of contemporary planning practice including the most innovative approaches. Our graduates are prepared to perform the tasks required for entry-level planning positions, and possess a broader perspective that is critical to the advancement of their careers. In collaboration with other departments, a wide variety of specializations are possible including economic development, historic preservation, environmental planning, and others.

How To Apply

Acceptance into the program is based on the undergraduate GPA (a minimum of 3.0 is normally required), GRE scores and letters of recommendation. To apply for admission into the graduate program in geography, send to the Graduate School:

  1. Completed graduate admission application form (with fees) - This can be submitted electronically.
  2. Official copy of GRE scores
  3. Official college transcripts
  4. One to two page statement of purpose and goals
  5. Three sealed recommendation letters.
