The DeLaMare Library is shifting into a new gear with the opening of its bicycle lab. On Thursday, Sept. 25, students, faculty, staff and Community Borrowers are invited to a kickoff event from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the DeLaMare Library.
The bicycle lab includes several complete ParkTool repair kits, bike stands strong enough to hold electric bikes, air pumps and manuals, all available for use or even check out.
Jessica Simpson, chair of the University’s Bicycle Working Group and director of the DeLaMare Library is thrilled to open the bicycle lab to users.

“Repair kits for bikes aren’t cheap,” Simpson said, “so we’re really proud to be able to offer this equipment to our community.”
Funding for the bicycle lab was provided by the Gregory Nelson Living Trust via Frankie Sue Del Papa, who contributed $15,000 in support.
“We hope the University community will join us on September 25 to check out what tools we have to offer,” Simpson said.
The Makerspace will host workshops related to repair, micromobility safety and bicycle security:
- How Not to Get Hit by Cars, Safety for Bicycles and Micromobility: Practical strategies for wheeled safety in urban environments
- Repair and Maintenance Workshops: Guided instruction using real tools to tackle common bike issues
- Securing Your Ride: Tips for theft prevention and choosing the right lock
While the makerspace does not offer bicycle repair training currently, some tools and equipment require a brief orientation before use, and users must have completed the Makerspace 101 training before utilizing the lab.
Fun fact: Three of the DeLaMare Library’s eight faculty and staff members regularly commute to work by bike.
The League of American Bicyclists recently recertified the University as a bronze-level Bicycle Friendly University in 2024.
“We are working to earn silver next time!” Simpson said.
The bicycle lab is open during the DeLaMare Library’s operating hours.
