Friday, Sept. 11th, 2026, marks 25 years since the 9/11 attacks and collapse of the Twin Towers. The University of Nevada, Reno, in collaboration with the Department of Veteran Services, invites students, staff and the community to participate in a week of reflection, remembrance and unity through a series of events held in honor of the milestone.
The week began at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8, as the University’s Department of Veteran Services along with students and staff gathered on the Quad to plant 2,977 flags paying tribute to the victims of the tragedy.
“It helps you remember the sacrifices that are made by military members, by their family members, by those who choose to serve, by first responders,” said Niccole Callahan, the veteran alumni member who coordinated this year’s flag planting. “It’s actually kind of fun to come out, hang out, plant some flags and enjoy the nice weather.”
The flags will remain on the Quad for the duration of the week, eventually becoming the backdrop for a remembrance ceremony held on the Quad at 8:46 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 11. Beginning at the moment the first tower was struck, this gathering invites the University community to come together to remember the day and honor those who were and continue to be impacted.
The event will feature performances from Nevada music ensembles, poetry readings, and speeches from both the Director of the VA Hospital and Provost Jeff Thompson.
The University and Veteran Services are offering more ways to discover new perspectives, pay tribute to victims and first responders and honor the milestone throughout campus all week long.
On Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 5:30 p.m. in the Joe Crowley Student Union, there will be a showing of the documentary “In the Shadow of Towers: Stuyvesant High.” This film offers a unique student and educator perspective as the 9/11 events unfolded 25 years ago. An insightful guest speaker discussion will follow the screening.
The annual University balloon lift-off in anticipation of the Great Reno Balloon Race will feature new elements to honor the nation. The University’s balloon will take off from the Quad at 7 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10 over the honorary flags while flying an American flag from the basket.
These events will not only commemorate the tragic events but also deepen understanding of and appreciation for the bravery, strength and unity displayed amid a national crisis. As this significant event is observed on campus this week, all are invited to join the University in continuing the legacy of those lost and sharing the stories that shaped our nation.
