University of Nevada, Reno Extension, in collaboration with the North Las Vegas Library District, will host a family literacy event at Extension in North Las Vegas, 2280 N. McDaniel St., Saturday, March 9, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The free event aims to foster a lifelong love for reading among Nevada families.

Dubbed, “Reading is Magic!”, the event is part of Nevada Reading Week celebrations, an annual statewide initiative aimed at promoting literacy in Nevada. It will feature a variety of activities, including book bag crafts; literacy games; and a presentation and book signing by Ken Lamug, an acclaimed author and illustrator. He will present signed complimentary books to the first 100 pre-K to 12th-grade attendees.

Upon arrival, participants will be provided with a ticket to choose a book from a selection donated by Extension, the North Las Vegas Library District and private donors. The books will be categorized by grade level and cover genres, such as fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels, poetry, favorites and classics. Extension encourages attendees to bring gently used books of all genres and for all age groups for trading, although this is optional.

“Nevada Reading Week serves as a reminder of the importance of fostering a lifelong love of reading,” said YaeBin Kim, an associate professor and Extension specialist. “Reading is not just a skill, it’s a gateway to imagination, knowledge and personal growth. Our literacy event provides an opportunity for families to come together, share their love of reading and discover new stories.”

Spread the Word Nevada, Children’s Cabinet, Vegas PBS, Acelero Learning and Nevada Talking Book Services will be on hand to support the event, with the Nevada Reading Week committee sponsoring the author visit.
