The University of Nevada, Reno has taken another significant step toward strengthening its global presence through comprehensive partnerships with major international universities. Yesterday, at a historic signing ceremony at Morrill Hall, University President Brian Sandoval and President of Hanyang University, one of Korea’s leading universities, Ki-jeong Lee signed an agreement that will deepen collaboration across research, academic programs, and student recruitment.
This new partnership follows a similar agreement signed last fall with the University of Osaka in Japan. Both agreements represent a shared commitment to advancing global education and fostering innovation through cross-border collaboration.
“Partnering with leading institutions in Asia strengthens our academic programs and research capabilities,” said University President Brian Sandoval. “It demonstrates our commitment to preparing students for success in an increasingly interconnected world.”
The partnerships are a key component of the University’s ongoing efforts through the E.L. Cord Center for Global Engagement. By integrating these partnerships into the Center’s broader mission, the University of Nevada reaffirms its commitment to a more globally engaged campus and positions itself as a leader in international education and collaboration. “With these new agreements in Japan and South Korea, we are building strategic alliances with top research universities in Asia. These partnerships will add significantly to our global branding, and we will continue to invest in our global engagement,” said Mehmet S. Tosun, chief international officer of the University of Nevada, Reno.
The partnerships with Korea’s Hanyang University and Japan's University of Osaka are designed to touch every part of the University — from faculty research and student exchanges to joint academic initiatives — underscoring Nevada’s dedication to building meaningful international relationships.
Part of Nevada’s GOED Trade Mission
The timing of these agreements aligns with the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) Trade Mission, which emphasized Nevada’s leadership in critical sectors and its commitment to international cooperation. The mission, held last November, spanned four days in Seoul and two days in Tokyo. The focus was on the Lithium Loop/battery supply chain, clean energy and technology, and semiconductor value chain.
A future of shared innovation
Through these agreements, the University of Nevada, Reno is not only expanding its academic reach but also contributing to Nevada’s broader economic and technological goals. By partnering with institutions like Hanyang University and the University of Osaka, the University is creating pathways for collaborative research, cultural exchange and innovation that will benefit students, faculty and the state for years to come.
