About Global Studies
The Ozmen Institute for Global Studies opened in July, 2018. The Institute at the University of Nevada, Reno, is made possible from a generous donation with the intended purpose to better connect the world. The Institute serves as the central hub for globally and internationally-oriented research across disciplines and units with the expressed desire to provide research based solutions to important societal problems to meet the challenges we confront in our work in the twenty-first century.
The Institute is a research and outreach initiative where faculty members who work on global topics at the University are invited to become affiliated with the Ozmen Institute for Global Studies. It brings together faculty members, well-established scholars and students from 18 different departments across eight participating colleges and schools across campus to provide them with opportunities for collaboration and funding to develop impactful global research and programs. It is intended that joint research projects will be developed around thematic clusters such as globalization, international security, economic development, immigration and border studies, and geopolitical and strategic studies, which will result in grants conferences, or research papers. The Institute helps to develop this research by offering funding and logistical support to faculty involved in global studies.
Over the last two years, the Ozmen Institute for Global Studies administered international research grants totaling more than $60,000 to 29 faculty and graduate students. The research supported through these grants spans the globe, representing five continents and 18 countries.
In addition, the Ozmen Institute for Global Studies has a robust outreach program aimed at promoting dialogue on critical global issues. It cultivates strong public awareness of global issues that are important to Northern Nevada communities. The Institute works with local agencies by engaging in awareness in global issues. Last year, the Institute engaged with more than 700 people through the successful delivery of virtual webinars and panel discussions on important global topics.
The Ozmen Institute for Global Studies is at the forefront of creating knowledge through basic and applied research, scholarship and artistry in strategically selected fields that affect Nevada, the nation and the world. Are you ready to become involved? Email the director.
