This program includes core coursework in fundamental areas of mechanical engineering, offering a foundational breadth of knowledge across the subject, with advanced coursework available in emerging areas in the field, including advanced manufacturing, autonomous systems and high-performance computing.
Research in mechanical engineering
The mechanical engineering faculty have research expertise in the following areas:
- Solid mechanics (smart/active composites, advanced manufacturing, fatigue, lightweight metals)
- Thermal/fluids/energy sciences (micro/nano & medical/biological/microbial flows, fire/nuclear packaging safety)
- System dynamics and control (autonomous systems, multi-agent systems, robotics, soft actuators)
Departmental research is sponsored by agencies such as the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, the Department of Transportation, the National Aeronautics and Space Agency, and private industries.
How do I apply?
Incoming students should have a background in the core areas of mechanical engineering, including statics, dynamics, thermodynamics, dynamic systems and control, fluid mechanics, and solid mechanics. For students who don't have background in one or more of these areas, faculty can help identify the additional courses they should take before completing our program.
Additionally, applicants should meet the following minimum requirements for admission:
- GPA of 3.25 from the B.S. program
- Combined GRE scores of 300. Candidates with quantitative scores above 155 are especially encouraged to apply.
- TOEFL score of 550 or IELTS score of 6.5. For students who have completed a bachelor's or master's degree at an English-speaking university, this requirement is waived.
In addition to grades and test scores, research or industrial experience, letters of recommendation, and statement of purpose are important parts of the application package.
Students will apply online through the Graduate School website, which also provides detailed instructions on the Graduate School's application and admission requirements. Is funding available?
Most students receive research or teaching assistantships to support their graduate studies. Exceptional students who have submitted a completed application to the graduate school will be considered for a teaching assistantship.
Research assistantships are awarded by individual faculty. Students should contact faculty members with research programs that interest them to learn about available assistantships as early as possible, even before applications are submitted to the graduate school.
