How to apply for the scholarships

There is one application form for the scholarships from the CoLang 2026 Local Organizing Committee, ELF and WRNALRC/AILDI. In the form, you will be asked what assistance you are requesting and what parts of the Institute you will be attending. Based on this information, you will be considered for the scholarships you are eligible for.

You will be asked to write about why you want to attend CoLang 2026, what experience you bring to language revitalization or linguistic fieldwork, what difference receiving a scholarship would make to you, and how attending CoLang will support your future community or language work. You may also submit up to 2 optional letters of recommendation by emailing them to colang2026@unr.edu by April 10, 2026. You are eligible to apply for these scholarships if you will be at least 18 years of age prior to June 20, 2026. All recipients are required to attend a full schedule of workshops during the two-week workshop period and, if registering for three weeks, the full week of the practicum as well.

Deadline

The deadline to apply for scholarships is April 10, 2026 (11:59 p.m. PDT).

Linguistic Society of America Fellowship

The Emmon Bach Fellowship is a named fellowship which covers registration, lodging, and a meal plan during the workshops and practica at CoLang 2026, plus additional limited funds to help defray the cost of travel. Therefore, the person awarded this fellowship is expected to attend the full duration of CoLang (June 22-July 10 – the full two weeks of workshops and the week of practica). There will be one successful candidate for this fellowship.

The Linguistic Society of America (LSA) offers the Emmon Bach Fellowship. Applicants must be student members of the LSA.

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Graduate students should not have received their Ph.D. before the completion of the Institute.) Applicants do not need to be US citizens. However, applicants will be responsible for any visas and/or other documentation allowing them to attend in the US. The LSA is not able to assist with this process except for providing a letter of invitation upon request. To be eligible to receive the fellowship, applicants must register for a full course load at the Institute if awarded one, though they need not register for the Institute before learning whether they have been awarded a fellowship.

The application for the Emmon Bach Fellowship is separate from the application for the other scholarships. Applicants may apply for the Emmon Bach as well as for other scholarships, but if they choose to do so, they must complete separate applications for both.

How to apply for the fellowship

To complete your application, you will be asked for information about your academic background, including a degree earned or in progress. You will also be asked about your experience with language documentation and language revitalization – you can discuss, for example, your experience with any of the following:

  • other language activities (e.g., language learning or teaching, formal or informal mentoring, using archives or previous recordings, recording languages through video, audio or writing
