Summary
Thierry Veyrié is the Culture & Heritage Director for the Burns Paiute Tribe. He holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Indiana University, Bloomington. His doctoral dissertation was entitled "A Historical Ethnography of the Fort McDermitt Paiute-Shoshone" (2021). As a doctoral student, he researched Paiute-Shoshone oral traditions as well as military correspondence from Fort McDermitt to weave them into a multicultural history of Fort McDermitt. Student of Neme Yaduana, the Northern Paiute language from Fort McDermitt and Burns Elders, he became Language & Traditional Culture Manager for the Burns Paiute Tribe after completing his doctoral degree. In 2022, he received several large federal grants to return to Fort McDermitt and create the Fort McDermitt Language Program, which he directed until late 2025. In January 2026, he made it back to the Burns Paiute Tribe in his new position. Thierry Veyrié has taught Paiute to all ages from preschool to adults and is passionate about finding new ways to engage communities with their Native Paiute language.
