Josiah Murphy

Documenting language for revitalization: Connecting lexicography, curriculum development and vocabulary learning

Summary

Josiah grew up as a word nerd and outdoor enthusiast in Appalachia, where she learned to backpack, canoe and navigate. She holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where she studied language documentation with a focus on linguist-community collaboration and materials creation for Indigenous language revitalization. Her research interests also include translanguaging, vocabulary acquisition and game design. She has worked with ASL signers in Ohio, Woleaian speakers in Hawai'i, Bitterroot Salish learners in Montana and taught EFL in China, Cambodia and Ohio.
