Words of the land: Documenting and teaching traditional ecological knowledge through language

Summary

Heather is a linguist and ethnobiologist whose work centers on the interconnections of language, culture, and ecological knowledge. She holds a Ph.D. in Field Linguistics and a master's in Ethnobotany, and currently teaches linguistics at California State University San Marcos. Her work includes language revitalization, curriculum development and place-based language learning. Her CoLang workshop “Words of the Land” explores how languages carry detailed knowledge of plants, animals and the land and offers ways to weave this knowledge into community-centered language learning materials.
