Finance

The Department of Finance offers a comprehensive and flexible curriculum designed to meet the diverse academic and career goals of our students. Our programs include an undergraduate major in Finance, a minor in Risk and Insurance, a Master of Science (MS) in Finance, an Accelerated MS in Finance (4+1 program), a Ph.D. in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance, and an online certificate program in Personal Financial Planning. Students can tailor their academic experience through a wide range of program options.

Bachelor of Science in Finance

The Bachelor of Science in Finance in the College of Business at the University of Nevada, Reno provides students knowledge essential for careers in financial management, banking, investments, and insurance.

Minor in Risk and Insurance

The Risk and Insurance minor offers students a pathway to understand risk management principles and the role of insurance in business and society. This program explores key areas of risk exposure, corporate risk management, employee benefits, and insurance operations including carrier, broker, and underwriting activities, equipping students with valuable insights that complement majors across the business disciplines.

Master of Science in Finance

The Master of Science in Finance program is designed to help students develop technical and analytical skills in the area of finance and to acquire the core conceptual knowledge about the applications of those skills in solving financial issues and furthering the body of knowledge through ongoing research. 

PhD in Business Administration (Finance)

The Ph.D. in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance prepares the next generation of financial economists with foundational knowledge and skills in the areas of asset pricing, corporate finance, insurance, and real estate. Training in research methods and statistics prepares students to create and test finance theory.

Accelerated Finance MS (4+1 Program)

The Accelerated Finance MS (4+1) program enables high-achieving undergraduate students to begin graduate coursework while completing their Bachelor of Science in Finance, allowing them to earn both a B.S. and M.S. in a reduced timeframe. This integrated pathway combines rigorous undergraduate preparation with advanced study to accelerate students’ progress toward technical mastery and career-ready expertise in finance.

Personal Financial Planning

The Personal Financial Planning program has been approved by the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) Board of Standards and fulfills the Education requirements for the CFP Certification Exam. Participants who complete the program will be eligible to take the CFP exam. The program offers six CFP certification courses (18 credit hours). All courses are 100% online and asynchronous. The course materials are available online for participants without scheduled meetings. 

A finance degree can be an excellent start for any student seeking a career in financial management, banking, investments or insurance.

Because the financial world consist of numerous interrelated areas, financiers must understand a broad range of topics to do their jobs well. Successful financiers not only grasp the many complex forces at work in finance, they also analyze how these forces interact. This knowledge allows them to point investors and companies toward sensible, comprehensive financial strategies.
